Professional Readings

Teachers lose their passion sometimes. But they are defined not by their failures but by their desire to keep moving forward to better serve the community. This book explores the inner life of a teacher and offers insights into how teachers like me can sustain their passion and commitment to teaching. Teachers should have integrity and refined identity. Just like me, I have once lost my passion in teaching but I didn't let it win because teachers are strong. Teachers should always regain their courage to teach.

Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom
Bell Hooks

In the book Teaching to Transgress, Hooks makes it clear that he bases his beliefs about education as the practice of freedom on how dominance and authority function in the classroom. If authority and dominance are not properly addressed, the effects they have on the learning environment may be insurmountable.

Hooks' book reflects the principles in Domain 3 of the Philippine Professional Standard for Teachers which is "diversity of learners". This book made me realize that establishing education as a practice of freedom rather than a practice of dominance requires asking oneself how language, ego, powerplay, embodiment, and silence are affecting the classroom.

Hooks guides us through difficult conversations about race, class, gender, sexuality, and other intersectionalities that are essential to transforming education into a practice of freedom throughout the entire book.

Teachers VS. Tech?: The Case of an Ed tech Revolution
Daisy Christodoulou

The COVID-19 pandemic's sudden increase in the use of technology to support student learning has highlighted the need for educators to comprehend how technology can support learning and how educators can make deliberate decisions regarding the use of technology in schools.

Upon reading the book, I agree with Christodoulou that when it comes to motivating students and evaluating complex ideas, for instance, teachers' expertise should be combined with technology's capacity to scale lectures, engage students in spaced repetition, and consistently apply rules to ensure fair grading. Teachers should also receive training in utilizing modern technology. This can help aid the diversity of learners in education.

Hence, Christodoulou draws the wise conclusion that improvements in education can only be made if they are based on the realities of how people learn, the goals that society and students have for education, and when they respect the knowledge of teachers.

As a becoming teacher I always try to extend my 21st century skills to further aid the needs of the students in this modern world.
